EMPRA showcase a soaring rock sound that flirts between sexy cool grooves and in your face sing a long anthems. Unapologetically loud, EMPRA’s uplifting message and fun summer vibes will supercharge your heart and lift your spirits.
EMPRA’s journey was born out of tragedy. The loss of lead singer Sanny’s band member and best mate of 17 years, Wayne Thunder. Through the very dark times that followed, Sanny; whose personal rite of passage includes getting banned from performing in Singapore for swearing onstage and accidentally inciting a riot, defying medical odds to play the guitar again after onstage accident which required his elbow to be replaced with a metal joint, wanted to record an album in Wayne’s honour.
He channelled his creative energies into his music, penning earnest, positive lyrics that tell the story of overcoming your personal demons. He set this catharsis to a soundtrack of high-energy rock, and begged bassist Matt to join the band after a lengthy deep and meaningful conversation outside a footy oval in Melbourne. 27 auditions later, guitar whiz Gaulty rocked their socks off in tryouts using only a practice amp a few broken knobs. A few false starts, which included a botched album recording which drained Sanny’s life savings and a couple of temporary drummers, in 2012 the band finally released their self titled debut album and toured nationally. The album was an instant hit with the underground rock crowd in Australia.
Affirming their reputation as one of Australia’s most musically consistent and hardest working bands, in 2013 EMPRA released a live EP capturing their powerful performance and the hit EP Strange Condition which demonstrated a new found depth and progression in their songwriting.
After more than 200 shows, enduring endless 14 hour interstate drives, surviving overseas tours on shoe string budgets, sleeping at airports and on cold hard floors, couch surfing and pitching tents in parks, founding drummer Matt Cattanach decided the touring life was no longer for him.
Feeling disheartened but armed with a full album worth of new songs, EMPRA needed to find a drummer for the journey ahead. They held auditions and after an unsuccessful 15 hour day with 24 drummers, Sanny, Matt & Gaulty were on the verge of packing up and going home. In came an enthusiastic young woman named G-Flip who tried out. She rocked the audition with her passion, commitment and cool moves and reinvigorated the EMPRA mojo once more.
It is this undeniable rock ’n’ roll passion and spirit in EMPRA that has led the band to many achievements in its short history. A prestigious Vanda & Young songwriting award nomination, arena shows abroad with Fall Out Boy, Australian festival appearances, numerous singles on Australian commercial radio rotation and American college radio, a collaboration with multiple grammy award winner Gotye, showcase performances in the USA & Asia and over four years of touring under their belt have catapulted the band into one of Australia’s most exciting new bands.
